Discovery docks with International Space Station Washington (AFP) Aug 30, 2009
The US shuttle Discovery made a picture-perfect docking with the International Space Station late Sunday, hooking up with the orbiting outpost eight minutes ahead of schedule. The US space agency NASA confirmed the docking procedure, which allows the seven-member Discovery crew to open a hatch and climb into the ISS to begin their nine days together with the six astronauts aboard there, at 7:54 pm (2354 GMT) over the Atlantic ocean. Commander Rick Sturckow guided the shuttle to a "smooth-as-silk" soft docking, said a commentator on NASA TV. ... read moreOpportunity Continues Meteorite Examination - Sol 1981-1987
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 31, 2009Opportunity is continuing its contact investigation of the 70-centimeter (28-inch) meteorite called "Block Island." On Sol 1981 (Aug. 20, 2009), the rover performed a very small rotation that moved the robotic arm (instrument deployment device, or IDD) in azimuth to reach new targets on the meteorite. On the next sol, the IDD collected a stack of microscopic imager (MI) images of ... more

Japan robotics experts unveil sci-fi wheelchair
Tokyo (AFP) Aug 26, 2009Robotics and medical experts in Japan on Wednesday unveiled the prototype of a new hi-tech electric wheelchair that resembles a scooter and promises greater mobility. Users ride astride the four-wheeled Rodem -- rather than sitting in it, as in a conventional wheelchair -- steer it with a joystick and hold onto motorbike-style handles while the knees and chest rest on cushions. ... more The 40-Year-Old Dream
Tucson AZ (SPX) Aug 26, 2009It's time to find out if humans can permanently live and work in space, according to an article written by Mark Sykes and published in the Arizona Daily Star, Tucson, Arizona's morning newspaper. "This has never been a part of U.S. space policy, despite a long history of public relations implying the opposite," Sykes says. Sykes, CEO and director of the Tucson-based Planetary Science ... more Launchspace Solar System Exploration Architecture: Reader Responses
Bethesda MD (SPX) Aug 24, 2009Wow! Launchspace received a large number of emails regarding last week's commentary by George Jeffs. Most were in agreement with some or all elements of Launchspace's suggested solar system architecture approach. Many said it was a common sense way to structure affordable exploration while maintaining a continuous human space flight capability. There was considerable concern about the ... more |

Block Island Offers More Opportunities For Closer Inspection
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 21, 2009Opportunity is continuing its in-situ (contact) investigation of the 70-centimeter (28-inch) meteorite called "Block Island." On Sol 1974 (Aug. 13, 2009), robotic arm (IDD) work on ground in front of the meteorite completed with a microscopic imager (MI) mosaic of pebbles called "Vail Beach" at the foot of Block Island. On the next sol, Opportunity bumped closer to Block Island by ... more The Ultimate Long Distance Communication
White Sands NM (SPX) Aug 20, 2009Anyone who's vacationed in the mountains or lived on a farm knows that it's hard to get good internet access or a strong cell phone signal in a remote area. Communicating across great distances has always been a challenge. So when NASA engineers designed the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), they knew it would need an extraordinary communications system. Over the next year, the LRO, NASA ... more Spirit Hits 2000 Sols On Mars Duty
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 20, 2009Today marks the 2,000th Martian day, or sol, of what was initially planned as a 90-sol mission on Mars for NASA's Spirit rover. Spirit's twin, Opportunity, will reach the 2,000-sol milestone on Sept. 8. Both rovers have found rocks altered by past action of water on Mars. Both show some signs of aging but remain capable of further scientific investigations. Since their landing halfwa ... more |
