NASA's LCROSS Mission Changes Impact Crater
Sunnyvale CA (SPX) Oct 02, 2009
NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite mission (LCROSS) based on new analysis of available lunar data, has shifted the target crater from Cabeus A to Cabeus (proper). The decision was based on continued evaluation of all available data and consultation/input from members of the LCROSS Science Team and the scientific community, including impact experts, ground and space based ... read more

Cars may one day mimic fish to avoid collisions
Tokyo (AFP) Oct 1, 2009
Engineers in Japan say they are a step closer to developing technology they hope will cut the risk of car crashes -- by mimicking the behaviour of fish. The experts at Nissan Motor have been studying fish and the way they are able to swim in schools and avoid colliding with each other. The result is a robot that can travel in a group of up to seven, avoiding bumps by sharing information ... more

    Iceberg Chasing And Laser Lights
MOffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 29, 2009
One of the 'fun science" activities we have carried out during AMASE 2009 is "iceberg chasing". Naturally this was all for a good scientific reason as we were interested in acquiring sediments trapped in calved icebergs for further characterization. Being in the arctic and around massive ice caps and glaciers it is no surprise that during the time we have been based on Lance we have seen ... more

Lotus Plant-Inspired Dust-Busting Shield To Protect Space Gear
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Sep 28, 2009
A plant that lives along muddy waterways in Asia has inspired a NASA team to develop a special coating to prevent dirt and even bacteria from sticking to and contaminating the surfaces of spaceflight gear. Researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., are developing a transparent coating that prevents dirt from sticking in the same way a lotus plant sheds water ... more
