NASA Spacecraft Impacts Lunar Crater In Search For Water Ice
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 12, 2009
NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, created twin impacts on the moon's surface early Friday in a search for water ice. Scientists will analyze data from the spacecraft's instruments to assess whether water ice is present. The satellite traveled 5.6 million miles during an historic 113-day mission that ended in the Cabeus crater, a permanently shadowed region ... read more

Opportunity Knocks with Another Meteorite Find
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 12, 2009
Opportunity has discovered another large (0.5-meter) meteorite. The rover began the approach to this new meteorite, called "Shelter Island," with a 28-meter backward drive on Sol 2022. On Sol 2024, Opportunity turned around with a 2-meter drive to face the meteorite. A final 1-meter bump on Sol 2027 put the meteorite within the work volume of the rover robotic arm (IDD). ... more

First European Commander Of The ISS
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 12, 2009
ESA astronaut Frank De Winne became the first European commander of the International Space Station this morning with the departure of Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka who had filled this role since April. De Winne is the first non-American and non-Russian to take on this role. Nearly nine years after the first Expedition crew took up residence on the International Space Station (ISS) in ... more

UBC Engineering Students Unveil Moon Dust-Shoveling Robot
Vancouver, Canada (SPX) Oct 12, 2009
A robot designed by UBC students will be shoveling moon dust at an international robotics competition next week, vying for a $500,000 prize and the opportunity to contribute to NASA's future space exploration projects. The UBC team has created a robotic machine that can excavate simulated lunar soil (regolith). Excavating regolith will be an important part of any construction project or ... more

Israeli navy to deploy robot craft
Tel Aviv, Israel (UPI) Oct 6, 2009
The Israeli navy will shortly begin deploying unmanned craft along the Mediterranean coast, particularly off the Hamas-held Gaza Strip in the south and Lebanon in the north where Hezbollah guerrillas operate. These highly maneuverable unmanned surface vehicles, operated by remote control from land stations, can carry out a wide range of missions, such as patrolling coastal waters to ... more

Scientists See Water Ice In Fresh Craters On Mars
Tempe AZ (SPX) Sep 25, 2009
Scientists are seeing sub-surface water ice that may be 99 percent pure halfway between the north pole and the equator on Mars, thanks to quick-turnaround observations from orbit of fresh meteorite impact craters on the planet. "We knew there was ice below the surface at high latitudes of Mars, but we find that it extends far closer to the equator than you would think, based on ... more

NASA works on space age coating
Greenbelt, Md. (UPI) Sep 24, 2009
NASA scientists say they've developing a coating that can prevent dirt and even bacteria from sticking to and contaminating the surfaces of spaceflight gear. Scientists at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said they are developing a transparent coating that prevents dirt from sticking in the same way an Asian lotus plant sheds water. They said although a lotus leaf ... more

    Japan's Honda unveils futuristic unicyle
    Tokyo (AFP) Sept 24, 2009
It looks a bit like a plastic figure of eight, and its Japanese designers say it could revolutionise the way we get around, in total comfort and without breaking a sweat. Honda Motor on Thursday unveiled an experimental electric unicycle with inbuilt balance control, a bit of advanced technology Honda borrowed from ASIMO, its humanoid robot. Riders steer it by shifting their upper body ... more
