A Mars Rover Named "Curiosity"
Huntsville AL (SPX) Nov 02, 2009
If you found your grandmother's diary, tattered and dust covered, up in the attic, would you read it? Of course you would. Granny was a pistol! Brush off the dust, open up the little book, and foray into her lively and interesting past. Dust cloaks some fascinating tales in other places, too. NASA scientists will soon brush the dust off some Martian rocks that are practically bursting ... read more

Amnesia-Like Behavior Returns On Spirit
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 02, 2009
Until Oct. 24, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover had gone more than six months without an episode of amnesia-like symptoms like those that appeared on four occasions earlier this year. In these amnesia events, Spirit fails to record data from the day's activities onto the type of computer memory - non-volatile "flash" memory - that can retain the data when the rover powers down for its energy ... more

Robot Armada Might Scale New Worlds
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 29, 2009
An armada of robots may one day fly above the mountain tops of Saturn's moon Titan, cross its vast dunes and sail in its liquid lakes. Wolfgang Fink, visiting associate in physics at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena says we are on the brink of a great paradigm shift in planetary exploration, and the next round of robotic explorers will be nothing like what we see today. ... more

    Kangaroos On The Moon
Sydeny, Australia (SPX) Oct 27, 2009
When Apollo astronauts landed on the Moon, they found it wasn't easy to walk around. The low gravity, uneven ground and bulky spacesuits hindered their movement. To move long distances quickly, the astronauts found it was easier to make small "kangaroo hops" with both legs. They would literally propel themselves above the surface before they made gentle falls to the ground. Machines that ... more

Establish One Or More Self-Sustaining, Permanent Space Colonies
Bethesda MD (SPX) Oct 27, 2009
In response to a Launchspace request for comments, we have a guest commentary by Phil Henderson, Space Systems Engineer, Palm Bay, Florida: Exploration of Mars is a worthy goal, but it should not be the only goal. In fact, it alone could become like Kennedy's original moon goal and once completed, it becomes "been there, done that". A more worthy goal might be: To establish one or more ... more

    Opportunity Finished With 'Shelter Island'
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 19, 2009
Opportunity completed its survey of the meteorite called "Shelter Island". On Sol 2029 (Oct. 8, 2009), the rover completed the in-situ (contact) science campaign on the meteorite's surface with a microscopic imager (MI) mosaic and an alpha particle X-ray spectrometer (APXS) placement for integration. On Sol 2031 (Oct. 10, 2009), the robotic arm (instrument deployment device, or IDD) was ... more

European Ministers Prepare A Roadmap Towards A Common Vision
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 16, 2009
Ministers from the 29 European Space Agency and European Union Member States will meet in Prague on 23 October for the 1st EU-ESA International Conference on Human Space Exploration, to prepare a roadmap leading to the definition of a common vision and strategic planning for space exploration. This first step in a process that will lead to the definition of a European vision in this field ... more

    Migrating Microbes
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 16, 2009
In the ongoing quest for extraterrestrial life, imagine the day scientists discover life on another planet. Then imagine finding out that those life forms actually originated on Earth. With every spacecraft that leaves Earth, millions of microbes try to hitch a ride into outer space. NASA hopes to launch a Mars Sample Return Mission in the future, and preventing cross-contamination of Mars ... more
