Demilitarisation - Getting Shot Of The MLRS Rocket Stock
Paris, France (SPX) Nov 11, 2009
MBDA is bidding for two separate demilitarisation contracts involving a combined total of 49,000 MLRS rockets currently held in the UK and French inventory. In keeping with the spirit of the 2008 Oslo accord, the UK and France are already looking at means of de-stocking and demilitarising their inventory of sub-munition equipped MLRS rockets (27,000 in the case of the UK and 22,000 for ... read more

The Stars My Destination
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Nov 10, 2009
In Alfred Bester's classic novel, The Stars My Destination, Gully Foyle, anti-hero of the future, is picked up after spending almost six months drifting alone in the outer reaches of the solar system. As he puts it, "One hundred and seventy days dying and not yet dead..." This summer, two intrepid American spacecraft are celebrating a mind-boggling thirty-two years alone in the ... more

Prize awarded for wireless energy systems
    Washington (UPI) Nov 9, 2009
The U.S. space agency says it has awarded $900,000 in prize money to a Seattle company for creating a wireless energy beaming technology. The company, LaserMotive, won the Power Beaming Challenge competition, which was a demonstration of wireless power transmission that enabled a robotic device to climb a vertical cable. NASA said the technology developed by LaserMotive might one day ... more

Professor To Predict Weather On Mars
College Station TX (SPX) Nov 05, 2009
Is there such a thing as "weather" on Mars? There are some doubts, considering the planet's atmosphere is only 1 percent as dense as that of the Earth. Mars, however, definitely has clouds, drastically low temperatures and out-of-this-world dust storms, and Istvan Szunyogh, a Texas A and M professor of atmospheric sciences, has been awarded a NASA grant to analyze and forecast Martian weather. ... more

Robots Ask 'Are You Being Served'
    Al-Ain, UAE (AFP) Nov 3, 2009
A laboratory in the UAE has built what it says is the world's first Arabic-speaking robot which could soon go into mass production to serve as staff in shopping malls. Ibn Sina, named after the 11th century Islamic philosopher and scientist commonly known in English as Avicenna, was designed by a team at UAE University in the city of Al-Ain, which is part of Abu Dhabi emirate. "It is the ... more

Robot Armada Might Scale New Worlds
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 29, 2009
An armada of robots may one day fly above the mountain tops of Saturn's moon Titan, cross its vast dunes and sail in its liquid lakes. Wolfgang Fink, visiting associate in physics at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena says we are on the brink of a great paradigm shift in planetary exploration, and the next round of robotic explorers will be nothing like what we see today. ... more

    Kangaroos On The Moon
Sydeny, Australia (SPX) Oct 27, 2009
When Apollo astronauts landed on the Moon, they found it wasn't easy to walk around. The low gravity, uneven ground and bulky spacesuits hindered their movement. To move long distances quickly, the astronauts found it was easier to make small "kangaroo hops" with both legs. They would literally propel themselves above the surface before they made gentle falls to the ground. Machines that ... more

Establish One Or More Self-Sustaining, Permanent Space Colonies
Bethesda MD (SPX) Oct 27, 2009
In response to a Launchspace request for comments, we have a guest commentary by Phil Henderson, Space Systems Engineer, Palm Bay, Florida: Exploration of Mars is a worthy goal, but it should not be the only goal. In fact, it alone could become like Kennedy's original moon goal and once completed, it becomes "been there, done that". A more worthy goal might be: To establish one or more ... more
