Underwater gas may hold clues on Turkish quake risk
Istanbul (AFP) Dec 15, 2009Natural gas that lies under Turkey's Marmara Sea close to Istanbul could provide advance warning of an earthquake experts believe will hit the country's largest city, scientists said on Tuesday. Researchers from France and Turkey scanned the Marmara's seabed over six weeks using a robotic sonar device, similar to the kind of equipment used to detect shoals of fish. Their mission was to ... more Low Mass Planets May Be Common Around Nearby Stars
Santa Cruz CA (SPX) Dec 15, 2009An international team of planet hunters has discovered as many as six low-mass planets around two nearby Sun-like stars, including two "super-Earths" with masses 5 and 7.5 times the mass of Earth. The researchers, led by Steven Vogt of the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, said the two "super-Earths" are the first ones found around ... more Biosatellite To The Moon
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Dec 15, 2009If we hope to return astronauts to the Moon in the future, we need to carry out a lot of preparations. Magnetic Power Revealed In Gamma-Ray Burst Jet
Birkenhead, UK (SPX) Dec 10, 2009The Liverpool Telescope has used a unique scientific camera (named RINGO) to measure the polarization of the light from a Gamma Ray Burst and show that strong magnetic fields are responsible for beaming the light towards the Earth. The result is reported in a paper in Nature magazine by the team of Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) astronomers who built and operate the instrument. ... more US Air Force confirms 'Beast of Kandahar' drone
Washington (AFP) Dec 8, 2009The US Air Force on Tuesday confirmed for the first time that it is flying a stealth unmanned aircraft known as the "Beast of Kandahar," a drone spotted in photos and shrouded in secrecy.
