Rover Gives Opportunity To View Interior Of Mars
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 22, 2010
NASA's Mars exploration rover Opportunity is allowing scientists to get a glimpse deep inside Mars. Perched on a rippled Martian plain, a dark rock not much bigger than a basketball was the target of interest for Opportunity during the past two months. Dubbed "Marquette Island," the rock is providing a better understanding of the mineral and chemical makeup of the Martian interior. "Marque ... read more

S.Korean scientists develop walking robot maid
Seoul (AFP) Jan 18, 2010
South Korean scientists have developed a walking robot maid which can clean a home, dump clothes in a washing machine and even heat food in a microwave. Mahru-Z has a human-like body including a rotating head, arms, legs and six fingers plus three-dimensional vision to recognise chores that need to be tackled, media reports said Monday. Paris (AFP) Jan 17, 2010
Drones have become synonymous with US military strikes in hotspots like Afghanistan. But now a French firm has built a mini version piloted by an iPhone that brings video games to the streets. The flying saucer-like AR.Drone -- AR stands for augmented reality -- caused a sensation when it was revealed to an unsuspecting world at a trend-setting consumer electronics show in Las Vegas last we ... more

Hints Of Hesperian Lakes
London, UK (SPX) Jan 14, 2010
Spectacular satellite images suggest that Mars was warm enough to sustain lakes three billion years ago, a period that was previously thought to be too cold and arid to sustain water on the surface, according to research published in the journal Geology. The research, by a team from Imperial College London and University College London (UCL), suggests that during the Hesperian Epoch, appro ... more

Goddard Scientist Breakthrough Given Ticket To Mars
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Jan 06, 2010
The quest to discover whether Mars ever hosted an environment friendly to microscopic forms of life has just gotten a shot in the arm. "Mars was a lot different 3-1/2 billion years ago. It was more like Earth with liquid water," said Jennifer Eigenbrode, a scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Maybe life existed back then. Maybe it has persisted, which is possible ... more

Mars Spirit Rover Facing End Of Mission Decision
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 04, 2010
NASA's Mars rover Spirit will mark six years of unprecedented science exploration and inspiration for the American public on Sunday. However, the upcoming Martian winter could end the roving career of the beloved, scrappy robot. Spirit successfully landed on the Red Planet at 8:35 p.m. PST on Jan. 3, 2004, and its twin Opportunity arrived at 9:05 p.m. Jan. 24, 2004. The rovers began missions intended to last for three months but which have lasted six Earth years, or 3.2 Mars years. During this time, Spirit has found evidence of a steamy and violent environment on ancient Mars that was quite different from the wet and acidic past documented by Opportunity - halfway around the planet. ... more
