Historic deep-sea robot is lost off Chile
Woods Hole, Mass. (UPI) Mar 9, 2009
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution says its pioneering deep-sea exploration robot the "Autonomous Benthic Explorer" has been lost at sea. The robot, nicknamed ABE, was one of the first successful submersible vehicles that could operate both unmanned and untethered to surface ships. Officials said it was lost Friday during a research expedition off the coast of Chile. Scientists said the 15-year-old vessel was launched late Thursday night and had reached the seafloor to begin its 22 ... read more

Israel's arms industry produces giant UAV
Tel Aviv, Israel (UPI) Feb 22, 2009
Israel Aerospace Industries' unveiling of a unique long-range unmanned aerial vehicle that can reach Iran is a big technological breakthrough for a defense industry that has carved a niche for itself in the global arms market. The 4.5-ton Heron TP, dubbed the Eitan, which is Hebrew for "strong," is 79 feet long. It has a wingspan of 86 feet - about the size of a Boeing 737 airliner - a ... more

Journey To The Center Of Mars
Huntsville AL (SPX) Feb 26, 2010
February 24, 2010: Mars rover Spirit has tenaciously swept, scraped, and squeezed secrets from the forbidding surface of Mars for 6 years. Now at an impasse, up to its belly in sand, it has struggled to tilt its solar panels toward the sun and collect just enough power to survive the perilously cold Martian winter. If Spirit can make it through to spring, the feisty robot will prove it's still i ... more

Robotic kidney surgery has good outcomes
Winston-Salem, N.C. (UPI) Feb 23, 2009
A Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center study shows robot-assisted kidney surgery is faster and has better outcomes. Dr. Ashok Hemal, a urologic surgeon, compared laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery for repairing blockages that prevent urine from draining normally into the bladder. The researchers followed the patients for 18 months and determined both options were equally successful, but the robot-assisted technique had several advantages. On average, robot-assisted surgery ... read more
