Obama sets new course to conquer the final frontier
Kennedy Space Center, Florida (AFP) April 15, 2010
President Barack Obama Thursday set a bold new course for the future of US space travel, planning to send American astronauts into Mars orbit within the next three decades. And he sought to quell a storm of outrage that met earlier plans unveiled by his administration, vowing before NASA staff that he was "100 percent committed" to their mission and the US space agency's future. "As president, I believe that space exploration is not a luxury, it's not an afterthought in America's quest for a bri ... read more

Japan unveils humanoid robot that laughs and smiles
Osaka (AFP) April 3, 2010
Japanese researchers said Saturday they have developed a humanoid robot that can laugh and smile as it mimics a person's facial expressions. The robot, Geminoid TMF, can move its rubber facial skin to imitate a smile, a laugh showing teeth, and a grim look with furrowed brows, by receiving electric signals from the person it is modelled on. The researchers demonstrated with a robot made ... more

Researchers Equip Robot Sub With Sensory System Inspired By Blind Fish
Munich, Germany (SPX) Apr 01, 2010
Clever as a blind fish, the underwater robot "Snookie" can orient itself in murky waters with an artificial sensory organ inspired by the so-called lateral-line system, found in fish and some amphibians. The experimental vehicle was developed by researchers at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen within the framework of the CoTeSys (Cognition for Technical Systems) excellence cluster. In t ... more

Robots, space technology run Australia's mining miracle
Dampier, Australia (AFP) March 28, 2010
The heavy clank of machinery rings out across a seemingly deserted Outback mine site as an invisible satellite signal fires Rio Tinto's production line into motion. Massive stackers and reclaimers begin the task of sifting through rust-coloured piles of rich iron ore, readying them for the rail journey hundreds of kilometres from mine to port. It's an industrious scene - with hardly a living being in sight. "People frequently ask whether we have anyone working here at all," one miner at Rio ... read more
