Herschel telescope shows galactic star formation is slowing
Noordwijk, Netherlands (AFP) May 6, 2010
The formation of new stars in galaxies like the Milky Way has declined five-fold in the last three billion years, initial findings of the European Space Agency's Herschel telescope showed Thursday. While scientists already knew that star formation was more prolific billions of years ago, the Herschel telescope has for the first time been able to start measuring the rate of decline, scientist Steve Eales said at the launch. Low Oxygen Resources In Central New York's Three Rivers System
Syracuse NY (SPX) Apr 30, 2010
A unique three-year longitudinal and vertical study of Central New York's Three Rivers system-involving the Oswego, Oneida and Seneca rivers-has revealed that oxygen resources have become degraded by several stressors, including the impact of wastewater treatment plants, nonpoint runoff, an increase in invasive zebra mussels and channelization of the flow. As oxygen is necessary to support ... more

'BP pays for all this' : White House on oil disaster
Washington (AFP) April 29, 2010
President Barack Obama and aides Thursday repeatedly pinned the cost of the unfolding Gulf coast oil disaster on BP, calling for the "strongest possible response" from the British energy giant. The White House, coordinating a pan-governmental effort to break up the slick as it bore down on the Mississippi delta, offered "all available" resources, including military hardware if needed. EARTH OBSERVATION
Into The Deep
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Apr 29, 2010
There's a glut of research on climate change. Seemingly every day some new study comes out demonstrating the latest scientific understanding of changes to the Earth's systems. But the foundation of much research of this type is measurement, and there are, of course, severe limits to what can be measured. Improvements to our measurement abilities goes a long way towards improving and expanding climate change research. Which is why a new technology that fuels ocean robot exploration has been getting ... read more
