Iran unveils human-like robot: report
Tehran (AFP) July 4, 2010
Iran has developed a new human-like walking robot to be used in "sensitive jobs," government newspaper Iran reported on Sunday. Soorena-2, named after an ancient Persian warrior, was unveiled by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday. It is 1.45 metres (4.7 feet) tall and weighs 45 kilograms (99 pounds), the report said. "Walking slowly like human beings with regular arm and leg movements are among its characteristics," it said. "Such robots are designed and developed to be used in sensitive ... read more

Oceanographers Call For More Ocean-Observing In Antarctica
New Brunswick NJ (SPX) Jun 23, 2010
Rutgers' Oscar Schofield and five colleagues from other institutions have published in Science, calling for expanded ocean-observing in the Antarctic, particularly in the Western Antarctic Peninsula, or WAP. This mountainous arm of the continent stretches north toward South America. In their review paper, the co-authors, who have done research in the Antarctic, often together, argue ... more

Hunting For Fossils On Europa
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jun 21, 2010
If extraterrestrial life exists on Jupiter's moon Europa, instead of deploying probes to drill past its ice shell to look for aliens in the ocean below, one might just go fossil-hunting on the icy surface. "A prospector sent there could possibly find extraterrestrial life within our lifetimes," suggested planetary scientist Richard Greenberg at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planeta ... more

The Hayabusa Adventure
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jun 18, 2010
When I first heard about the propose MUSES-C mission (the original name of what is now known as Hayabusa), I thought it was an impossible dream. Sample return is hard - it has only been done robotically once (by the Soviet Union) from a planetary surface. It requires many major individual mission accomplishments: rendezvous with a celestial body, operations and science investigations around that body, landing, sampling, capture of the sample, return targeting and flight to Earth, and finally, entry and ... read more
