3 Questions: Richard Binzel On Astronomers' Powerful New Tool
Boston MA (SPX) Jul 19, 2010
Last month, it was announced that the first Pan-STARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System) telescope, PS1, is fully operational. The system is designed to search for "killer" asteroids and comets by mapping large portions of the sky each night to look for moving objects in our solar system. Based in Hawaii, Pan-STARRS features the world's largest digital camera - a 1,400-megapixel device designed by researchers at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. Follow-up observations based on those ima ... read more

Rosetta Triumphs At Asteroid Lutetia
Paris, France (ESA) Jul 14, 2010
Asteroid Lutetia has been revealed as a battered world of many craters. ESA's Rosetta mission has returned the first close-up images of the asteroid showing it is most probably a primitive survivor from the violent birth of the Solar System. The flyby was a spectacular success with Rosetta performing faultlessly. Closest approach took place at 18:10 CEST, at a distance of 3162 km. The imag ... more

BP fixes new cap to finally stem Gulf oil disaster
New Orleans, Louisiana (AFP) July 12, 2010
BP placed Monday a new cap over the ruptured oil pipe in the Gulf of Mexico, hoping to stem the catastrophic flow of toxic crude once and for all. Almost 13 weeks after America's worst environmental disaster began with a deadly explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig, the end is finally in sight as engineers lower a device called the "Top Hat 10" from a surface ship. As of 2000 GMT, the giant valve system was 40 feet (12 meters) away from the pipe with BP officials saying it should be latched on ... read more
