NASA has issued a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) to purchase specific data resulting from industry efforts to test and verify vehicle capabilities through demonstrations of small robotic landers. The purpose is to inform the development of future human and robotic lander vehicles. The U.S. Army has placed orders with iRobot and Boeing for 94 small unmanned ground vehicles under a $14.6 million contract announced this week. Under the deal the companies will provide the Army with new 310 models, plus spare parts. Japan's new robot brings visitors home by video-phone

Japanese researchers Sunday unveiled a robot that can mimic speech and gestures sent to it by video-phone, replicating a distant caller's presence. Dubbed the Telenoid R1, the robot will allow "people to feel as if an acquaintance in the distance is next to you," according to its developers, Osaka University and the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute.
