Testing The Exomars Rover In Mars-Like Conditions
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Oct 22, 2010
A couple of clicks of the mouse are enough to send the ExoMars rover with its six flexible metal wheels moving across the sand tank towards the first obstacle. Bernhard Rebele, Maximilian Apfelbeck and Sebastian Kuss from the German Aerospace Center Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics have built a challenging obstacle course, which really puts the rover to the test. Its middle wheels scrabble obstinately against the sharp edges of the limestone. The steady grinding sound as the rover passes ove ... read more

Robot punches humans -- for science
Ljubljana, Slovenia (UPI) Oct 14, 2010
Volunteers in Slovenia are allowing themselves to be repeatedly punched - by a robot - in an effort to assess human-robot pain thresholds, a researcher says. The late science fiction author Isaac Asimov's famous First Law of Robotics - "A robot may not injure a human being" - appears to be taking a hammering, but the scientist behind it says it's all in a good cause, NewScientist.co ... more

Saddam-era firm now making music instead of bombs
Baghdad (AFP) Oct 16, 2010
Before the 2003 US-led invasion, Iraq's Al-Shaheed State Company used to make a blast, literally. Now it helps to produce music. "We used to make mortar shell casings, but our engineers changed the production line, so we now make brass for trumpets and vases, and copper cables," said Amine Hawas, a company technician. Al-Shaheed's fate has been mirrored by a string of other companies cre ... more
