BAE Systems modernizing naval guns

The Mk 45 gun system on U.S. Navy destroyers is being overhauled and upgraded by BAE Systems.

The initial contract for the work, including the upgrade of the Mk 45s to Mod 4 configuration for six ships, is worth $80 million. Exercise of an option for modernization of the system on four additional destroyers would bring the total value of the contract to $130 million.

"Our combat-proven Mk 45 Naval Gun System provides ships with an effective weapon for anti-surface, strike, fire support, and anti-air warfare combat," said Joseph Senftle, vice president and general manager of Weapon Systems at BAE Systems. "This award strengthens our position in large caliber guns and promotes the United States' naval gun industrial base."

BAE Systems said the Mod 4 modernization includes a 62-caliber barrel, strengthened gun and mount sub-systems, enhanced control systems, a reduced signature, and low maintenance gun shield.

"The operational and performance improvements are designed to support potential increased ranges for naval surface fire support achieved through future extended range guided munitions," the company said.

The first upgraded Mk 45 gun system will be delivered to the Navy in October of 2017. Deliveries will continue until the beginning of 2020.

BAE Systems' facility in Louisville, Ky., will conduct the overhaul and modernization work with support from a BAE Systems facility in Minnesota.
