GMV Spearheads AVIS Project for Enhancing Autonomous Vessel Navigation in Europe

The onset of a new era in European inland waterway transportation was marked by the commencement of the AVIS project on January 30, under the leadership of GMV, a renowned multinational technology company. This ambitious project, backed by the European Commission, aims to revolutionize navigation for autonomous vessels using key EU space systems, including the European Global Navigation Satellite System (E-GNSS) and Copernicus.

GMV's role extends beyond just leading the project; it's also at the forefront of harnessing synergies between E-GNSS and Copernicus, both critical components in this pioneering endeavor. The project's objectives align with the broader European Union mission to transform transportation systems, making them more sustainable and less polluting. This initiative is particularly significant given the ongoing transformations in Europe's inland waterways, driven by advancements in safety, digitalization, and sustainability.

Despite the absence of autonomous vessel traffic in these waterways presently, the industry is actively preparing for its future integration. AVIS is set to address various emerging challenges by enhancing the accuracy and reliability of navigation forecasts and positioning for vessels. This improvement aims to optimize routes and elevate safety standards.

Moreover, AVIS ambitiously plans to define requirements for operating autonomous vessels in European inland waterways, develop onboard equipment prototypes, and conduct pilot tests to demonstrate the feasibility and value of its solutions. The project also intends to contribute to the European Committee for Drawing Up Standards in the Field of Inland Navigation (CESNI) by establishing new regulations for safe navigation.

Spanning 37 months, the project is managed by a consortium led by GMV, which brings extensive experience in E-GNSS and Copernicus. GMV will take charge of standardization and technical solution definition. The consortium comprises various organizations, including Germany's WSV, Hungary's RSOE, HA Consulting Ltd., Tresco, Bergmann Marine, Ernst and Young, and GMV's Romanian subsidiary.

Marta Cueto, the project manager at GMV, underscores the technical complexity and ambitious scope of the AVIS project. She highlights its innovative approach, leveraging EU systems for improved operations in inland waterway navigation, a critical domain for GMV's future ventures.

In alignment with the European Union's NAIADES project, AVIS also aims to contribute to sustainable water management. By leveraging artificial intelligence technologies, the project supports the EU's goal of achieving zero CO2 emissions in the transportation sector, a major contributor to environmental pollution. This effort is part of the EU's broader strategy to transform its transportation systems into more sustainable and less polluting alternatives.

The NAIADES III action plan (2021-2027) further emphasizes the EU's commitment to enhancing the competitiveness of river and canal shipping. By integrating modern digital developments, the plan seeks to position these waterways as vital components of a comprehensive multimodal transportation chain.

The AVIS project led by GMV represents a significant step towards the future of autonomous waterway transportation in Europe. Its successful implementation could not only redefine inland navigation but also contribute significantly to the EU's environmental and technological objectives.
