Soil Studies Continue At Phoenix Mars Lander Site
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 13, 2008
Vibration of the screen above a laboratory oven on NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander on Saturday, Aug. 9, succeeded in getting enough soil into the oven to begin analysis. Commands were sent for the lander's Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer (TEGA) to begin analysis Sunday of the soil sample from a trench called "Rosy Red." Phoenix's robotic arm delivered soil Thursday from the Rosy Red trench ... more

U.S. military use of robots increases
St. Louis (UPI) Aug 5, 2008
Military robots are no longer only science fiction, with the U.S. Army planning to have 30 percent of its forces composed of robots by 2020. Washington University Assistant Professor Bill Smart and doctoral student Doug Few said the Army's robots won't resemble robotic soldiers from movies such as "Star Wars" and "I, Robot." "When the military says 'robot' they mean everything ... more

    Japan's Toyota unveils next-generation scooter
    Tokyo (AFP) Aug 1, 2008
Japan's Toyota Motor on Friday unveiled the Winglet -- a new two-wheel electric scooter to rival the Segway. The Winglet, which the automaker describes as "a personal transport assistance robot", can be controlled by shifting body weight, allowing the rider to go forward, backward and turn while standing upright. It cruises at a speed of up to six kilometres (four miles) per hour and ... more

Mission Extended As Phoenix Confirms Martian Water
Tucson AZ (SPX) Aug 01, 2008
Laboratory tests aboard NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander have identified water in a soil sample. The lander's robotic arm delivered the sample Wednesday to an instrument that identifies vapors produced by the heating of samples. "We have water," said William Boynton of the University of Arizona, lead scientist for the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer, or TEGA. "We've seen evidence for this ... more

Robo-relationships are virtually assured: British experts
    London (AFP) July 30, 2008
David McGoran cradles his baby in his arms. As he looks down into its big, dark eyes, it turns its head towards him and blinks, looking contented as it curls a bony white finger around his hand. But the "baby" is not human. And it looks more like the evil Gollum from "The Lord Of The Rings" movies except in a hemp romper suit with cloth ears than a gurgly infant. Meet Heart Robot ... more

Europe And Japan Join Forces To Map Out Future Of Intelligent Robots
Paris, France (SPX) Jul 31, 2008
The field of robotics could be poised for a breakthrough, leading to a new generation of intelligent machines capable of taking on multiple tasks and moving out of the factory into the home and general workplace. The great success of robots so far has been in automating repetitive tasks in process control and assembly, yielding dramatic cuts in production, but the next step towards ... more
