Washington (AFP) Aug 31, 2009
The US shuttle Discovery made a textbook docking Sunday with the International Space Station where a total of 13 astronauts now begin nine days together improving and supplying the orbiting outpost. The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration confirmed the docking procedure, which occurred at 0054 GMT, about 10 minutes ahead of schedule. Commander Rick Sturckow guided the ... read more

Astronomers Find Coldest, Driest, Calmest Place On Earth
Sydney NSW (SPX) Sep 01, 2009
The search for the best observatory site in the world has lead to the discovery of what is thought to be the coldest, driest, calmest place on Earth. No human is thought to have ever been there but it is expected to yield images of the heavens three times sharper than any ever taken from the ground. The joint US-Australian research team combined data from satellites, ground stations and ... more

Discovery docks with International Space Station
    Washington (AFP) Aug 30, 2009
The US shuttle Discovery made a picture-perfect docking with the International Space Station late Sunday, hooking up with the orbiting outpost eight minutes ahead of schedule. The US space agency NASA confirmed the docking procedure, which allows the seven-member Discovery crew to open a hatch and climb into the ISS to begin their nine days together with the six astronauts aboard there, at 7:54 pm (2354 GMT) over the Atlantic ocean. Commander Rick Sturckow guided the shuttle to a "smooth-as-silk" soft docking, said a commentator on NASA TV. ... more

Opportunity Continues Meteorite Examination - Sol 1981-1987
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 31, 2009
Opportunity is continuing its contact investigation of the 70-centimeter (28-inch) meteorite called "Block Island." On Sol 1981 (Aug. 20, 2009), the rover performed a very small rotation that moved the robotic arm (instrument deployment device, or IDD) in azimuth to reach new targets on the meteorite. On the next sol, the IDD collected a stack of microscopic imager (MI) images of ... more

Ultrathin LEDS Create New Classes Of Lighting And Display Systems
Champaign IL (SPX) Aug 24, 2009
A new process for creating ultrathin, ultrasmall inorganic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and assembling them into large arrays offers new classes of lighting and display systems with interesting properties, such as see-through construction and mechanical flexibility, that would be impossible to achieve with existing technologies. Applications for the arrays, which can be printed onto flat ... more

Missing An Opportunity To Build A Long-Lasting Solar System Exploration Architecture
Bethesda MD (SPX) Aug 21, 2009
Recently, Aviation Week and Space News both published reports speculating on several options the Augustine Panel may recommend as the blueprint for NASA's future human space flight program. If these are indeed the true options the Panel will present to the Obama Administration later this month, the U.S. will lose the opportunity to create a truly advantageous solar system exploration ... more

Spirit Could Yet Rove For Many More Sols
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 21, 2009
Spirit has passed 2,000 sols on the surface of Mars, yet another milestone. Starting its third sol millennia, Spirit continues to profile the geology at the location where the rover is embedded, a site called "Troy" on the west side of "Home Plate." On Sol 1995 (Aug. 13, 2009), Spirit continued the campaign of grinding deeper into surface targets, then collecting in situ (contact) ... more
