Japan sends first cargo spacecraft to ISS
Tokyo (AFP) Sept 11, 2009
Japan early Friday launched its first cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station, aiming for a share of space transport after the retirement of the US space shuttle fleet next year. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the unmanned H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) atop an H-IIB rocket, which is also on its first flight, as scheduled just after 2:00 am (1700 GMT Thursday ... read more

Spirit Update: Examining Target 'Olive Leaf'
Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 11, 2009
Spirit is continuing remote sensing and in situ science while positioned at her embedded location on the west side of Home Plate. On Sol 2015 (Sept. 3, 2009), a Moessbauer (MB) integration was completed on target "Olive Leaf." On the next sol, a rock abrasion tool (RAT) calibration and a RAT diagnostics were performed, then the APXS was placed on Olive Leaf for an overnight integration. ... more

    Discovery undocks from space station
    Washington (AFP) Sept 8, 2009
The space shuttle Discovery undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday and began its journey back to Earth after a successful mission. Discovery undocked from the ISS at 1926 GMT and circled the space station to survey and photograph its exterior -- customary practice to end such missions -- before returning to Earth for a scheduled Thursday landing in Florida. Before ... more

MRO Spots Apollo 12 And Surveyor 3
Washington DC (SPX) Sep 09, 2009
Four months after the success of Apollo 11, NASA launched Apollo 12 in November 1969. Almost exactly 40 years later, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has seen the landing site. Engineering and safety constraints in place for these earliest manned lunar missions dictated landing Apollo 12 at an equatorial site on a flat lava plain (known as maria on the moon). NASA selected a site near ... more

Japan Set To Launch Space Freighter To ISS On Sept. 10
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Sep 08, 2009
Japan will launch its first domestic cargo spaceship to the International Space Station ISS on September 10, a Russian space official said on Monday. The spacecraft was built by Japan's space agency JAXA, and will lift off on board the country's new H-2B rocket. It will deliver about 4.5 metric tons of scientific equipment to the orbital station. Astronauts complete first Discovery mission spacewalk
    Washington (AFP) Sept 1, 2009
Two US astronauts on Wednesday completed the first of three spacewalks scheduled for the space shuttle Discovery's nine-day mission at the ISS, removing a massive coolant tank. With the help of the station's robotic arm and guided by shuttle Commander Rick Sturckow and spacewalk choreographer Pat Forrester, the duo removed the bulky - albeit weightless in space - liquid ammonia coolant tank from the ISS truss. A new, 800-kilogram replacement will be installed during the second spacewalk late ... more

    Dawn Continues Its Quiet Cruise
Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 02, 2009
The Dawn mission remains on course as the spacecraft continues to thrust with its ion propulsion system, patiently, persistently, and gently changing its orbit to keep its appointment with protoplanet Vesta in two years. Meanwhile, closer to mission control and in stark contrast, brave firefighters work hard to protect JPL and the nearby homes of many of its employees and others in the community ... more
