European Ministers Prepare A Roadmap Towards A Common Vision
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 16, 2009
Ministers from the 29 European Space Agency and European Union Member States will meet in Prague on 23 October for the 1st EU-ESA International Conference on Human Space Exploration, to prepare a roadmap leading to the definition of a common vision and strategic planning for space exploration. This first step in a process that will lead to the definition of a European vision in this field ... read more

Lunar Lander Floats On Electric-Blue Jets
Huntsville AL (SPX) Oct 16, 2009
How do you fly on a world with no atmosphere? Wings won't work and neither do propellers. And don't even try that parachute! NASA engineer Brian Mulac has the answer. "All it takes is practice, practice, practice," he says. "And of course, thrusters." The space agency is perfecting the art using a prototype lunar lander at the Marshall Space Flight Center: "What we've got here is a 'flying ... more

    Migrating Microbes
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 16, 2009
In the ongoing quest for extraterrestrial life, imagine the day scientists discover life on another planet. Then imagine finding out that those life forms actually originated on Earth. With every spacecraft that leaves Earth, millions of microbes try to hitch a ride into outer space. NASA hopes to launch a Mars Sample Return Mission in the future, and preventing cross-contamination of Mars ... more

NASA probe helps to map solar system
    Washington (AFP) Oct 15, 2009
A NASA probe exploring the outer edges of the solar system has helped scientists create the first map of this little-understood region of space 10 billion miles (16 billion kilometers) from Earth. Data from the US space agency's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) spacecraft is helping researchers explore the boundary between our Sun and the rest of the galaxy by collecting high-speed atom ... more

First European Commander Of The ISS
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 12, 2009
ESA astronaut Frank De Winne became the first European commander of the International Space Station this morning with the departure of Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka who had filled this role since April. De Winne is the first non-American and non-Russian to take on this role. Nearly nine years after the first Expedition crew took up residence on the International Space Station (ISS) in ... more

Cars may one day mimic fish to avoid collisions
    Tokyo (AFP) Oct 1, 2009
Engineers in Japan say they are a step closer to developing technology they hope will cut the risk of car crashes -- by mimicking the behaviour of fish. The experts at Nissan Motor have been studying fish and the way they are able to swim in schools and avoid colliding with each other. The result is a robot that can travel in a group of up to seven, avoiding bumps by sharing information ... more

SMART-1 Mapped Crash Scene Of Upcoming LCROSS Impact
Paris, France (ESA) Sep 29, 2009
The European Space Agency's SMART-1 team has released an image of the future impact site of NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS). LCROSS will search for water ice on the Moon by making two impacts into a crater named Cabeus A at the lunar South Pole. The impacts are scheduled for 11:30 am UT on 9 October 2009. Bjoern Grieger, the liaison scientist for SMART-1's ... more

    Iceberg Chasing And Laser Lights
MOffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 29, 2009
One of the 'fun science" activities we have carried out during AMASE 2009 is "iceberg chasing". Naturally this was all for a good scientific reason as we were interested in acquiring sediments trapped in calved icebergs for further characterization. Being in the arctic and around massive ice caps and glaciers it is no surprise that during the time we have been based on Lance we have seen ... more
