Comet chaser set for last Earth flyby boost
Paris (AFP) Nov 12, 2009
A billion-euro (1.5-billion-dollar) European spacecraft designed to rendezvous with a comet will skim past Earth on Friday on a final, eagerly-awaited swing by, enabling it to gain speed for a date in deep space in 2014. European Space Agency (ESA) scientists are relishing the moment when they get to see their cherished baby, Rosetta, which was hoisted aloft in 2004 in one of the most extrao ... read more

NASA to begin attempts to free Spirit
Pasadena CA (UPI) Nov 12, 2009
NASA scientists say they plan to begin transmitting commands to the Mars exploration rover Spirit in an attempt to free the robot from martian sand. Spirit has been stuck in martian sand since April 23. Researchers expect the extraction process -- to begin Monday -- to be long and the outcome uncertain. "This is going to be a lengthy process, and there's a high probability attemp ... more

Demilitarisation - Getting Shot Of The MLRS Rocket Stock
Paris, France (SPX) Nov 11, 2009
MBDA is bidding for two separate demilitarisation contracts involving a combined total of 49,000 MLRS rockets currently held in the UK and French inventory. In keeping with the spirit of the 2008 Oslo accord, the UK and France are already looking at means of de-stocking and demilitarising their inventory of sub-munition equipped MLRS rockets (27,000 in the case of the UK and 22,000 for ... more

    The Stars My Destination
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Nov 10, 2009
In Alfred Bester's classic novel, The Stars My Destination, Gully Foyle, anti-hero of the future, is picked up after spending almost six months drifting alone in the outer reaches of the solar system. As he puts it, "One hundred and seventy days dying and not yet dead..." This summer, two intrepid American spacecraft are celebrating a mind-boggling thirty-two years alone in the ... more

Driver-less car in high-speed rally assault
Stanford, California (AFP) Nov 2, 2009
Imagine driving at top speed on a steep, winding mountain pass in the Alps, or the Himalayas, or the Rocky Mountains. Now, take your hands off the steering wheel and cover your eyes. Or grab a camera and take some pictures of the snowy mountain peaks. Or send a text message to a friend describing the scenery. You'd skid off the road and plunge into a deep ravine within seconds, right? ... more

    A Mars Rover Named "Curiosity"
Huntsville AL (SPX) Nov 02, 2009
If you found your grandmother's diary, tattered and dust covered, up in the attic, would you read it? Of course you would. Granny was a pistol! Brush off the dust, open up the little book, and foray into her lively and interesting past. Dust cloaks some fascinating tales in other places, too. NASA scientists will soon brush the dust off some Martian rocks that are practically bursting ... more

    Amnesia-Like Behavior Returns On Spirit
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 02, 2009
Until Oct. 24, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover had gone more than six months without an episode of amnesia-like symptoms like those that appeared on four occasions earlier this year. In these amnesia events, Spirit fails to record data from the day's activities onto the type of computer memory - non-volatile "flash" memory - that can retain the data when the rover powers down for its energy ... more
