Craters Around Lunar Poles Could Be ElectrifiedGreenbelt MD (SPX) Apr 19, 2010 As the solar wind flows over natural obstructions on the moon, it may charge polar lunar craters to hundreds of volts, according to new calculations by NASA's Lunar Science Institute team. Polar lunar craters are of interest because of resources, including water ice, which exist there. The moon's orientation to the sun keeps the bottoms of polar craters in permanent shadow, allowing temperatures there to plunge below minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit, cold enough to store volatile material like water f ... read more |

Discovery astronauts begin spacewalk
Washington (AFP) April 9, 2010Two astronauts from the shuttle Discovery began a six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk Friday, working on an ammonia tank on the outside of the International Space Station, NASA said. Mission specialists Clayton Anderson and Rick Mastracchio left the shuttle's airlock at 0531 GMT for the first of three space walks during the 13-day mission to resupply the space station. Moffett Field CA (SPX) Apr 06, 2010Cyborgs - human beings merged with machines - are a staple of science fiction. Star Wars's Darth Vader, Star Trek's Borg, and the Cybermen of Dr. Who are variations on this theme - and it's no coincidence they're all "bad guys." Researchers Equip Robot Sub With Sensory System Inspired By Blind FishMunich, Germany (SPX) Apr 01, 2010 Clever as a blind fish, the underwater robot "Snookie" can orient itself in murky waters with an artificial sensory organ inspired by the so-called lateral-line system, found in fish and some amphibians. The experimental vehicle was developed by researchers at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen within the framework of the CoTeSys (Cognition for Technical Systems) excellence cluster. In the future, the researchers expect such capabilities to enable underwater robots to work autonomously in operat ... read more |
