Better weather spurs hope over US oil spill
Venice, Louisiana (AFP) May 3, 2010
Kinder weather aided efforts Monday to counter a giant oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, as BP prepared to launch an unprecedented operation to try to contain the main leak with a giant dome. "We expect to load out the fabricated containment chamber tomorrow and we hope to have the system up and operating within a week," BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles told reporters. US oil production, shipping unaffected by spill so far
Washington (AFP) May 1, 2010
The Gulf of Mexico spill has not significantly disrupted US oil and gas production or vital shipping lanes along the southern US coast, the admiral leading the response effort said Saturday. Low Oxygen Resources In Central New York's Three Rivers System
Syracuse NY (SPX) Apr 30, 2010
A unique three-year longitudinal and vertical study of Central New York's Three Rivers system-involving the Oswego, Oneida and Seneca rivers-has revealed that oxygen resources have become degraded by several stressors, including the impact of wastewater treatment plants, nonpoint runoff, an increase in invasive zebra mussels and channelization of the flow. As oxygen is necessary to support life in aquatic ecosystems, its measurement is essential for gauging the overall state of water bodies; in on ... read more
