MBARI Sends Underwater Robot To Study Deepwater Horizon Spill
Moss Landing CA (SPX) Jun 02, 2010
MBARI's Division of Marine Operations, under an agreement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), sent a high-tech robotic submersible to the oily waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The goal is to collect information about the oil plume from the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig accident for NOAA. Although satellites and aircraft can help show the extent of the spill at the surface, MBARI's autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) will help researchers understand the nature and extent ... read more

Possible New Class Of Supernovae Puts Calcium In Your Bones
Berkeley CA (SPX) May 25, 2010
In the past decade, robotic telescopes have turned astronomers' attention to scads of strange exploding stars, one-offs that may or may not point to new and unusual physics. But supernova (SN) 2005E, discovered five years ago by the University of California, Berkeley's Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT), is one of eight known "calcium-rich supernovae" that seem to stand out as hors ... more

US slams BP, but awaits latest bid to plug oil leak
Galliano, Louisiana (AFP) May 24, 2010
The US government simultaneously slammed BP Monday and admitted it had no choice but to stick with the British energy giant's desperate bid to plug the gushing Gulf of Mexico oil leak. BP's chief executive Tony Hayward meanwhile confessed he was "gutted" that oil was now starting to clog fragile Louisiana wetlands, as heartrending footage emerged of helpless sea birds slimed by thick, pernicious crude. As the political fallout from the disaster mounted, BP engineers laid plans for their latest b ... read more
