A six-legged robot that may one day walk on the surface of the moon or Mars stretched it legs during a test stroll in a Southern California park, officials say. The All-Terrain, Hex-Limbed, Extra-Terrestrial Explorer (ATHLETE) is being developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., as a half-size prototype of a robot vehicle that could transport supplies, fix equipment or even do excavation, The Pasadena (Calif.) The U.S. Army has placed orders with iRobot and Boeing for 94 small unmanned ground vehicles under a $14.6 million contract announced this week. Under the deal the companies will provide the Army with new 310 models, plus spare parts. Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 02, 2010 Engineers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory are currently putting their All-Terrain, Hex-Limbed, Extra-Terrestrial Explorer (ATHLETE) through a series of long-drive tests on the long, dirt roads found adjacent to JPL. The JPL grounds do not include an unpaved area of sufficient size for testing such a large robot over a long distance.
