Phoenix Spacecraft Reports Good Health After Mars Landing
Pasadena CA (SPX) May 26, 2008
More than a generation after NASA landed the twin Vikings on Mars in 1976, the United States has reacquired the ability to land on Mars using retro rockets and opening the way to much larger robotic spacecraft to be sent to Mars including Mars Science Lab - a mobile robotic lab. In the meantime, rocket engineers and planetary scientists are ecstatic that the Phoenix has landed in the Martian northern arctic region where it will dig for signs of life and much more. ... read more

    Phoenix Lands On Mars
Pasadena CA (AFP) May 25, 2008
A NASA spacecraft today sent pictures showing itself in good condition after making the first successful landing in a polar region of Mars. The images from NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander also provided a glimpse of the flat valley floor expected to have water-rich permafrost within reach of the lander's robotic arm. The landing ends a 422-million-mile journey from Earth and begins a three-month ... more

    Robot conducts Detroit orchestra
Detroit, Michigan (AFP) May 14, 2008
High tech met high art late Tuesday when a robot conducted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. It was the first time an orchestra was handed over to a robot and the diminutive, spaceman-like machine got rave reviews. Both the audience and performers burst into applause after Honda's ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) robot led the symphony in a performance of "The Impossible Dream" ... more

Testing Times For Robotic Explorers On Mars
Moffett Field (SPX) May 09, 2008
Moffett Field (SPX) May 09, 2008 Many space missions use robots to explore. The rovers Spirit and Opportunity are still travelling around Mars, taking pictures and digging in the dirt. But could a robot identify alien life? How would a machine know the difference, for instance, between a rock and bacteria? Hoping to answer this question, a group of scientists, led by Derek Pullan of the ... more

    Opportunity Investigates Arthritic Rover Joint
Pasadena CA (SPX) May 07, 2008
Opportunity is healthy and all subsystems are performing as expected, with the exception of the Instrument Deployment Device (the robotic arm). Power has improved slightly during the last week, primarily as the result of a better state of charge in the batteries. Given the recent difficulties with the robotic arm, the rover hasn't been using the batteries as much as usual. Energy has ... more
