Lander Collects Icy Soil But Needs To Work On Delivery
Tucson AZ (SPX) Jul 28, 2008
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander's robotic arm collected a more than adequate amount of icy soil for baking in one of the lander's ovens but will need to adjust how it delivers samples. Engineers determined the rasping and scraping activity collected a total of 3 cubic centimeters of icy soil, more than enough to fill the tiny oven cell of the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer, or TEGA. ... read more

Trench On Mars Ready For Next Sampling By NASA Lander
Tucson AZ (SPX) Jul 25, 2008
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander has groomed the bottom of a shallow trench to prepare for collecting a sample to be analyzed from a hard subsurface layer where the soil may contain frozen water. Images received Thursday morning confirmed that the lander's robotic arm had scraped the top of the hard layer clean during activities of Phoenix's 58th Martian day, or sol, corresponding to overnight ... more

NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander Prepares For Next Sample Analysis
Tucson AZ (SPX) Jul 25, 2008
The latest activities of NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander have moved the mission closer to analyzing a sample of material, possibly icy soil, from a hard layer at the bottom of a shallow trench beside the lander. Overnight Tuesday to Wednesday, during Phoenix's 57th Martian day, or sol, since landing, Phoenix used its robotic arm to scrape the top of the hard layer in the trench informally named ... more

    Phoenix Completes Longest Work Shift
Tucson AZ (SPX) Jul 24, 2008
Phoenix early Tuesday finished its longest work shift of the mission. The lander stayed awake for 33 hours, completing tasks that included rasping and scraping by the robotic arm, in addition to atmosphere observations in coordination with simultaneous observations by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. "Our rasping test yesterday gave us enough confidence that we're now planning for the ... more

Mars Sample Return: Bridging Robotic And Human Exploration
Paris, France (ESA) Jul 22, 2008
The first robotic mission to return samples to Earth from Mars took a further step toward realisation with the recent publication of a mission design report by the iMARS Working Group. The report, defines key elements of the future internationally-funded mission involving the cooperation of ESA, NASA and other national agencies. iMARS, which stands for the International Mars ... more

    Phoenix Mars Lander Extends Trench
Tucson AZ (SPX) Jul 16, 2008
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander is using its Robotic Arm to enlarge an exposure of hard subsurface material expected to yield a sample of ice-rich soil for analysis in one of the lander's ovens. The trench was about 20 by 30 centimeters (8 by 12 inches) after work by the arm on Saturday. The team sent commands yesterday to extend the longer dimension by about 15 centimeters (6 inches). ... more

Sample-Collection Tests By Phoenix Lander Continue
Tucson AZ (SPX) Jul 11, 2008
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander's science and engineering teams are testing methods to get an icy sample into the Robotic Arm scoop for delivery to the Thermal and Evolved Gas Analyzer, or TEGA. Ray Arvidson of Washington University in St. Louis, Phoenix's "dig czar," said the hard Martian surface that Phoenix has reached proved to be a difficult target, comparing the process to scraping a side ... more

NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander Uses Soil Probe And Swiss Scope
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 11, 2008
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander has touched Martian soil with a fork-like probe for the first time and begun using a microscope that examines shapes of tiny particles by touching them. Phoenix's robotic arm pushed the fork-like probe's four spikes into undisturbed soil Tuesday as a validation test of the insertion procedure. The prongs of this thermal and electrical conductivity probe are about ... more

Phoenix Scrapes To Icy Soil In Wonderland
Tucson AZ (SPX) Jun 30, 2008
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander scraped to icy soil in the "Wonderland" area on Thursday, June 26, confirming that surface soil, subsurface soil and icy soil can be sampled at a single trench. Phoenix scientists are now assured they have a complete soil-layer profile in Wonderland's "Snow White" extended trench. By rasping to icy soil, the robotic arm on Phoenix proved it could flatten ... more

Cluster Listens To The Sounds Of Earth
Paris, France (ESA) Jun 30, 2008
The first thing an alien race is likely to hear from Earth is chirps and whistles, a bit like R2-D2, the robot from Star Wars. In reality, they are the sounds that accompany the aurora. Now ESA's Cluster mission is showing scientists how to understand this emission and, in the future, search for alien worlds by listening for their sounds. Scientists call this radio emission the Aurora ... more

Three Engineers, Hundreds of Robots, One Warehouse
New York NY (SPX) Jun 25, 2008
Two dozen squat robots scurry on the warehouse floor. They park underneath man-high inventory racks and activate a lifting mechanism that jacks the racks off the ground. One robot hauls shelves with 12-packs of Mountain Dew; another carries bottles of Redken shampoo. They move along straight lines and make 90-degree turns. It's a bit like Pac-Man. This is the demonstration facility ... more

Tartalo The Robot Is Knocking On Your Door
Bizkaia, Spain (SPX) Jun 24, 2008
A research team from the University of the Basque Country, led by Basilio Sierra, is devising a robot that can get around by itself. Tartalo is able to identify different places and ask permission before going through a doorway. We are accustomed to seeing robots programmed to carry out a concrete task such as the robotic arms well known in industry. What is surprising is to see a robot ... more
