Up, Up And Away With Aerobots
Moffett Field CA (SPX) May 14, 2010
Blimps and balloons are routinely used on Earth for aerial surveillance or to conduct research in hard-to-reach places. Similar unmanned flying vehicles, or aerobots, could open up new vistas in planetary exploration, providing an inexpensive way to observe large swaths of alien terrain without ever touching the ground. Rovers that can cover a few kilometers have boosted our knowledge of the Moon and Mars, taking up-close images of the surface and analyzing rocks and soil. A downside to rovers is ... read more

Dome to capture oil from disaster well as slick spreads
Venice, Louisiana (AFP) May 4, 2010
Winds pushed a giant oil slick towards fragile wetlands on the US coast Tuesday as efforts intensified to bottle up a ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico causing the growing environmental disaster. Under pressure energy giant BP said it had prepared the first of three giant domes to collect oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico and channel it into a waiting tanker. But a political temp ... more

BP delays oil 'dome' deployment until Wednesday
New Orleans (AFP) May 4, 2010
BP delayed until Wednesday the deployment of a giant "dome" to try to contain the main leak spewing crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Chief operating officer Doug Suttles told a press conference the British energy giant now planned to load the 98-ton structure onto a boat at "noon tomorrow" before shipping it out to the leak site. The dome, which is to be guided onto the largest of thre ... more

Ships rushed to Gulf islands as first oil arrives
On A Plane Over The Chandeleur Islands, Louisiana (AFP) May 4, 2010
An impromptu recovery fleet rushed Tuesday to an uninhabited US island chain in the Gulf of Mexico as the leading edge of a giant oil slick reached its shores. Twelve shrimp trawlers and 10 official response boats frantically laid protective boom around some of the Chandeleur Islands - a prime marsh and wildlife area - but initially failed to confirm any land impacts. US naval power threatened by new weapons: Gates
Washington (AFP) May 3, 2010
Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Monday said new weapons threatened US dominance of the high seas and questioned the US Navy's reliance on costly aircraft carriers and submarines. Anti-ship missiles and stealthy submarines could undermine the US military's global reach, putting carriers and American subs at risk, Gates said in a speech to retired members of the US Navy. "We know other nations are working on asymmetric ways to thwart the reach and striking power of the US battle fleet," Gates sa ... read more
