Reisman, Bowen Complete First STS-132 Spacewalk
Houston TX (SPX) May 18, 2010
Astronauts Garrett Reisman and Steve Bowen completed a seven hour, 25 minute spacewalk at 3:19 p.m. EDT. New Orleans, Louisiana (AFP) May 16, 2010
BP succeeded Sunday in capturing "some" oil and gas by inserting a mile-long tube into the main Gulf of Mexico leak, but would not say if it was a significant percentage of the gusher or just a dribble. Despite the uncertainty, it was still the first tangible sign of success in more than three weeks of efforts to prevent at least 210,000 gallons of oil from spewing unabated into the sea each ... more

Benefits of dispersants in treating spill must outweigh costs: EPA
Venice, Louisiana (AFP) May 12, 2010
Chemical dispersants will be used to battle a massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill only as long as their environmental benefits outweigh the costs, the head of the US Environmental Protection Agency pledged Wednesday. More than 1.5 million liters (400,000 gallons) of dispersants have been sprayed across the massive slick spreading out of the wreckage of a BP-leased offshore rig which sank nearly three weeks ago. Environmentalists, scientists and fisherman have raised concerns that the dispersants co ... read more
