Mars Rovers Set Surface Longevity Record
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 20, 2010
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Project will pass a historic Martian longevity record on Thursday, May 20. The Opportunity rover will surpass the duration record set by NASA's Viking 1 Lander of six years and 116 days operating on the surface of Mars. The effects of favorable weather on the red planet could also help the rovers generate more power. Opportunity's twin rover, Spirit, began working on Mars three weeks before Opportunity. However, Spirit has been out of communication since March 22. If ... read more

U.S. space planes 'worry Iran'
Beirut, Lebanon (UPI) May 14, 2010
It was probably no coincidence that U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled his Nuclear Posture Review amid the confrontation with Iran, noting that it allows for first-strike use against rogue states such as the United States considers the Islamic Republic. But some analysts say the Tehran regime sees the X-37B space plane and the Hypersonic Technology Vehicle test-launched April 22 as a ... more

Up, Up And Away With Aerobots
Moffett Field CA (SPX) May 14, 2010
Blimps and balloons are routinely used on Earth for aerial surveillance or to conduct research in hard-to-reach places. Similar unmanned flying vehicles, or aerobots, could open up new vistas in planetary exploration, providing an inexpensive way to observe large swaths of alien terrain without ever touching the ground. Rovers that can cover a few kilometers have boosted our knowledge of t ... more

Bats' Echolocation Recorded For Human Exploit
London, UK (SPX) May 17, 2010
Bats' remarkable ability to 'see' in the dark uses the echoes from their own calls to decipher the shape of their dark surroundings. This process, known as echolocation, allows bats to perceive their surroundings in great detail, detecting insect prey or identifying threatening predators, and is a skill that engineers are hoping to replicate. A team of British researchers has worked with s ... more

BP cagey as oil tube registers 'some' success
New Orleans, Louisiana (AFP) May 16, 2010
BP succeeded Sunday in capturing "some" oil and gas by inserting a mile-long tube into the main Gulf of Mexico leak, but would not say if it was a significant percentage of the gusher or just a dribble. Despite the uncertainty, it was still the first tangible sign of success in more than three weeks of efforts to prevent at least 210,000 gallons of oil from spewing unabated into the sea each day and feeding a massive slick off the coast of Louisiana. BP senior executive vice president Kent Wells ... read more
