BP accused of cover-up as size of slick remains unknown
New Orleans, Louisiana (AFP) May 20, 2010
BP faced accusations of a cover-up Thursday as pressure mounted for an accurate estimate of how much oil has really been gushing out of a ruptured pipe deep in the Gulf of Mexico for the past month. "We cannot trust BP," said Representative Edward Markey, chairman of the House subcommittee on energy and environment. "It's clear they have been hiding the actual consequences of this spill." The British energy giant had initially pegged the leak at 1,000 barrels per day, then quickly readjusted its ... read more

Final Attempts To Hear From Mars Phoenix Scheduled
Pasadena CA (SPX) May 17, 2010
From May 17 to 21, NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter will conduct a fourth and final campaign to check on whether the Phoenix Mars Lander has come back to life. During that period, Odyssey will listen for a signal from Phoenix during 61 flights over the lander's site on far-northern Mars. The orbiter detected no transmission from the lander in earlier campaigns totaling 150 overflights in Januar ... more

U.S. space planes 'worry Iran'
Beirut, Lebanon (UPI) May 14, 2010
It was probably no coincidence that U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled his Nuclear Posture Review amid the confrontation with Iran, noting that it allows for first-strike use against rogue states such as the United States considers the Islamic Republic. But some analysts say the Tehran regime sees the X-37B space plane and the Hypersonic Technology Vehicle test-launched April 22 as a ... more

Up, Up And Away With Aerobots
Moffett Field CA (SPX) May 14, 2010
Blimps and balloons are routinely used on Earth for aerial surveillance or to conduct research in hard-to-reach places. Similar unmanned flying vehicles, or aerobots, could open up new vistas in planetary exploration, providing an inexpensive way to observe large swaths of alien terrain without ever touching the ground. Rovers that can cover a few kilometers have boosted our knowledge of t ... more

Engineers search for solutions as Obama blasts oil companies
Washington (AFP) May 15, 2010
Engineers frantically searched Saturday for ways to plug an underwater oil gush in the Gulf of Mexico after US President Barack Obama lashed out at oil companies for trying to divert blame for the slick. As experts said the amount of oil flowing into the sea from the wreckage of the sunken Deepwater Horizon rig was likely much higher than estimated, Obama vowed he would not rest until the leak was contained and capped. Visibly angered by the gravity of the disaster and the failure to contain the ... read more
